IMF: U.S. banks could face a new wave of bankruptcies

The U.S. banking sector is facing serious problems due to higher interest rates and a record drop in commercial real estate prices, the International Monetary Fund warned on Tuesday. These factors may provoke another wave of bankruptcies, which will affect about 1/3 of the entire banking system of the States. Financial insolvency of even one organization will undermine confidence in the banking industry, Profinance.ru reports the forecast of the fund.

Both small and large banks may be under attack, according to the IMF. Concerns about the stability of the sector increased after the recent collapse of 25% of shares of New York Community Bancorp, which reported losses in the real estate market. Investors are concerned about the level of risk that credit institutions now face in this area. According to the fund, banks anticipate the next cases of insolvency of clients and are forced to create voluminous reserves to insure against possible losses.
